FAQs
can I use fertility awareness if I don't have regular cycles?
Regular cycles are not required! SymptoPro is not the rhythm method and can be used effectively for women who have PCOS, endometriosis, and pre-menopause, as well as women who are breastfeeding or have irregular cycles.
is fertility awareness effective?
Fertility Awareness Based Methods (FABMs) have been shown to be highly effective with method effectiveness figures ranging from 97-99.9%. With the Sympto-Thermal method use effectiveness, reflecting the actual experience in day-to-day life, is 90-99 percent effective. These numbers are baed on individuals who participated in a structured learning program with individualized follow-up, that they chart consistently and correctly, and that they follow all rules.
can I use fertility awareness if I am on the pill?
The simple answer...yes and no. If you're currently on the pill, patch, shot, or IUD and interested in learning more about your cycle, sick of the side effects of birth control and looking for a more natural method, NFP/FAM might just be what you are looking for.

The thing about charting while on birth control is that it doesn't give you the full picture of your body's health and cycle. The most important piece of FAMs is tracking ovulation, and most forms of birth control work to suppress ovulation. So even if you are charting everything perfectly while on birth control you can't be sure that the info you are gathering is really telling you anything of use.

If you are looking to see if you are able to commit to checking for signs of fertility every day, like taking your temp, checking for cervical mucus, etc. then charting while on the pill might be useful for you for a short period of time. Although, you will likely be more committed to remembering when you are no longer on birth control.
Truthfully, if you are serious about learning to chart and learning more about your cycles, it only makes sense to ditch birth control altogether. It does require time to learn your and also a short period of abstinence while you figure out this new lifestyle but it is all absolutely worth it in the end! If you're already committed to the idea of learning how to chart, let's work together so you feel confident to reach whatever fertility awareness goals you have!
can I use fertility awareness to get pregnant?
Yes! One of the awesome benefits of fertility awareness is the same information couples use to avoid a pregnancy, can help them know the best time to achieve a pregnancy. It also provides for very early identification of pregnancy and the information to set a correct due date. Also, the information gained from charting your fertility helps identify fertility problems and the best times for fertility tests.
is fertility awareness hard to learn?
No! When learning to chart the observations themselves can be learned fairly quickly. In one World Health Organization (WHO) study, 97 percent of women were able to identify the cervical mucus changes in the first cycle. Most people are familiar with taking a temperature reading and find it takes just a little effort to establish a habit of taking it upon waking. It takes no more than 2-5 minutes each day to observe your signs and chart them. However, each woman’s situation and cycling pattern is unique, so personal attention is a very important component of learning SymptoPro with a trained instructor.

how is fertility awareness different than the rhythm method?
FAM is NOT Calendar Rhythm, which was a guesstimate. Methods, like SymptoPro, are based on personal daily observations so any variation (earlier signs of fertility or delay in fertility) may be taken into account. It can be used after childbirth and discontinuing hormonal contraceptives and during premenopause.
can I use fertility awareness if I am breastfeeding?
Yes! The return of fertility after birth depends upon whether or not a woman is breastfeeding and how she is breastfeeding. It also varies for each individual woman—there is a wide range of when fertility returns. The best thing to do is to consult with an instructor for specific recommendations for your cycling pattern based upon your charting and specific circumstances surrounding your breastfeeding habits.
are there any fertility devices I can use while using fam?
There are a number of devices and hormonal tests that are marketed with FDA approval for identifying the fertile time of the cycle. To date, none of them have been FDA approved to help avoid pregnancy. Right now, learning a method with an instructor is the most effective way to practice a Fertility Awareness Based Method. Some women find the devices and tests reinforce what they have learned in classes.
