Let’s start with the most basic definition: The Fertility Awareness Method (FAM)  is the practice of learning to read the quiet messages of your body to determine your “fertile window “ each month, because no, you are not fertile every single day of the month!

You track your cervical mucus and basal body temperature every single day, with the optional sign of cervix position. By tracking these scientifically proven messages from our bodies, FAM can give you a detailed understanding of your body, cycles & fertility. 

 

You can use FAM as birth control by avoiding unprotected sex during your “fertile window”, or if you are trying to conceive you know when the optimal time to time have sex is.

  • You have to chart every day.

  • Requires you to use the method correctly and consistently (active participate vs just getting an implant or IUD).

  • Does not protect against STIs.

  • Barrier methods or other alternatives must be used during fertile window.

so what does this all mean in my daily life?

First things first, I always recommend taking a class from a trained instructor. This part is especially important if you are certain you want to avoid pregnancy and intend to use FAM as birth control.

FAM on a daily basis looks like taking your waking temperature before you get out of bed every morning and checking your cervical fluid each time you use the bathroom. (optional to incorporate checking your cervix position)

Taking your temperature is as easy as rolling over in bed, grabbing your thermometer and sticking it in your mouth for a few minutes while you stay snuggled up in bed. Checking your cervical fluid is as easy as wiping each time before you use the bathroom and observing what you see and feel. At the end of the day, or after each observation you record everything from that day. Total probably takes 3-5 minutes each day. It might sound like a lot of work, but I promise it becomes a habit as easy as brushing your teeth every day.
